6/27/2002 - TRIATHLETES TAKE THE KRISPY KREME CHALLENGE IN BIRMINGHAM
SportsFirst "Tri-it-On" Triathlon attracts first-timers from age 8 to 64.
(Birmingham, AL) June 27, 2002.Competitors in the SportsFirst Tri-it-On Triathlon Saturday will get a sweet treat as they near the finish line. Athletes who take the "Krispy Kreme Challenge" will grab a doughnut at the water station a mile from the finish line to qualify for t-shirts and other prizes including a year of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. But, race organizers say that just crossing the finish line is the greatest prize of all for first - time triathletes.
"This is our showcase race of the year when it comes down to bringing people into the sport. Most of the field is first timers. About 250 people are doing their first triathlon ever Saturday, and that makes it the most exciting race we do", says Race Director Terese Bynum of Team-Magic, "You really see the excitement at the finish line." Bynum notes that Team- Magic's other Birmingham Triathlons attract elite athletes from 43 states and 14 countries. But she says nothing matches the excitement of watching a first time triathlete cross the finish line.
The SportsFirst Tri-it-On Triathlon starts at 7:00 a.m. Saturday, June 29th at SportsFirst Mountain Brook. The course includes a 200-yard pool swim, 8.5-mile bike ride through the streets of Mountain Brook and a two-mile run to Mt. Brook Village. Close to 300 people have signed up as of Thursday, the youngest is an 8 year old boy, the oldest is a . 64 year old man. Complete race info can be found at the website http://www.team-magic.com/.
